8 Ways to Stay Happy at Work After the Holidays

27-Dec-2016 11:00:00

After eating all that indulgent food, watching reruns of your favourite shows and catching up with loved ones, getting back to the office can be daunting.

Here are 8 tips to keep that holiday cheer going for as long as possible.

  1. Finish your last day at work by decluttering.

Having a lot of paper left on your desk will not help you unwind. Spend the last 10 minutes of your workday tidying up your work area so you are greeted with a fresh workspace when you get back.

  1. Start your first day back with some ‘me time’.

Grab a cup of coffee. Plan what you want to achieve this week and only then look through the seemingly never-ending soap opera that is your inbox.

  1. Take a deep breath, read and prioritise.

While you were away, something went wrong. Don’t panic. Try and read everything in the email thread before putting that item on your to-do list. Most probably one of your colleagues already sorted it out or the situation isn’t as urgent as it was.

  1. Reminisce and share.

Psychologists say that reminiscing about a trip or a holiday, even long after it’s over, can bring deep pleasure in the present. The smell of a Christmas blend tea or coffee might do the trick. Also, sharing some treats from your holiday with your colleagues is a good way to spread the joy. We at the Convene office do it all the time.

  1. Talk, don’t email.

Pick up the phone or walk down the hall and talk directly to colleagues. For remote worker, use chat (or the conversations feature in Convene). This is a great way to amp up productivity and get away from your computer screen.

 6. Work offsite when you need to buckle down.

An office can be a distracting place sometimes and part of keeping up that 'vacation glow' is by feeling productive. Move away from your desk, even to the lobby or the closest café for a few hours and finish what you planned on doing. Keep the company chat channel opened if you feel that you might be needed.
Or better yet, have work from home day. This study from Harvard Business Review shows how Ctrip increased staff productivity by allowing employees to work remotely.

   7. Take a break.

Have a change of pace and go for a brisk walk around the building. According to studies taking intermittent breaks helps recharge not only your brain but also your physical and emotional capacities that allow you to keep focused.

  8. Cut down on meeting times, but organise them first.

Cut down your 1-hour meetings to 50 minutes. You will get the same amount of work done because so much time is usually wasted dealing with setup (especially if you don’t have a simple digital meeting platform like Convene). Planning and breaking down the meeting agenda in advance helps productivity. Organise further by setting time limits on each agenda item. This way, going to a meeting is less stressful and therefore you are making easier to maintain that festive cheer.
